abstract = "Agriculture has been the main economic activity on the state of
Paran{\'a} since the 1960´s. Over this period governmental
incentives for cultivating the land have been causing
deforestation and infractions on the Brazilian Forest Code (Law nº
4.771/65), more specifically on the Permanents Preservations Areas
(APPs) regulations. This study aims to evaluate the agreement
between land cover and the APPs rules in the municipality of
Corn{\'e}lio Proc{\'o}pio, state of Paran{\'a}. For the
production of the land use/cover map an unsupervised
classification method was applied over an ETM+/Landsat image from
year 2002 considering the following classes: agriculture, pasture,
urban area, forest and dams. SRTM data was used to obtain the APP
categories top of hill and slopes steeper than 45º and a
watercourse map (1:25.000) was used for the recognition of APP
categories river and spring buffers. The category slope was
eliminated from the analyses because it does not exceed 28º on the
entire study site. The APPs occupy an area of 17,942.43 ha (27.68%
of the municipalitys area) and it is not fully respected. Pasture
and agriculture cover 36.83% and 40.28% of the APPs original area
respectively. The major violations on the Code were on categories
springs and top of hills with 91.58% and 90.38% of their areas
converted into some type of land use. The category 100 meters
buffer from riversides is the most respected with 44.18% of its
area covered by forest.",
